Large shopping halls have stores for almost everything you can think of. The “Gross Leasable Area” tells us which stores are the biggest in the world. This is the amount of space on the land that can be used for things that bring in money, like shopping, eating, and fun. They are all in Asia, where land is cheap and labor is cheap, and there has been a building boom. There are only two shopping malls on this list that are not in Asia.
World’s Biggest 10 Malls
1. Berjaya Times Square
Berjaya Times Square is a twin tower complex in Kuala Lumpur that has two five-star hotels and a shopping centre. It is the fifth biggest building in the world right now, with a floor space of 7.5 million square feet (700,000 m²). The shopping mall has over 1,000 stores, 65 restaurants, and a number of entertainment venues, such as Cosmo’s World, Asia’s biggest indoor theme park, and Malaysia’s first IMAX 2D and 3D theatre, which is on the 10th floor.
2. SM Megamall
One of the biggest malls in the Philippines is SM Megamall, which opened in 1991 and is in Metro Manila. The mall can hold up to 4 million people, but only 800,000 people walk through it every day. One big building makes up the mall. The Toy Kingdom, movie theatres, a bowling alley and food courts are all in Building A. Building B is where the stores are located.
There are several places to eat on the bridgeway that connects the mall’s two main buildings. At the moment, SM Megamall is getting a lot of repairs and additions. It will be the biggest shopping mall in the Philippines when it’s all done.
3. Siam Paragon
One of the biggest shopping malls in Thailand is Siam Paragon in Bangkok. Only CentralWorld, which is close by, is bigger. There are many unique shops and restaurants there, as well as a movie theatre complex, the Siam Ocean World aquarium, the Thai Art Gallery and an opera house. It also has a singing room and a big bowling hall.
4. Istanbul Cevahir
In Turkey, the Cevahir Shopping and Entertainment Centre is on the European side of Istanbul. It opened in 2005. It’s Europe’s biggest shopping centre. The shopping area has 343 stores, 34 fast food places, and 14 high-end restaurants. There is also a big stage for events, 12 movie theatres, a bowling alley, a small roller coaster, and other fun things to do.
5. Dubai Mall
The Dubai Mall is part of the Burj Khalifa complex, which has the world’s largest building ever. The Dubai Mall is the world’s biggest shopping mall by overall area, at over 12 million square feet, which is bigger than 50 soccer fields.
However, if you look at rentable space, it’s about the same size as the West Edmonton Mall. The mall has more than 1,200 stores, including the biggest candy store in the world, as well as an ice rink, a SEGA game centre with a 3D bowling game, a 5-star hotel, 22 movie theatres, and 120 restaurants and bars. An pool that is one of the biggest in the world can be found in the mall.
6. SM Mall of Asia
The SM Mall of Asia in Metro Manila, Philippines, opened in 2006 and is made up of four buildings linked by pathways. There is a 20-seater bus that goes around the mall grounds for buyers. An IMAX theatre with one of the biggest 3D screens in the world is one of the mall’s key draws. There is also an Olympic-sized ice rink in the mall. It can be used for both leisure and professional ice hockey and figure skating.
7. West Edmonton Mall
The largest shopping mall in the world was the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, from 1981 to 2004. It is now the biggest mall in the Americas. The mall has 800 shops and services, as well as the world’s biggest indoor entertainment park, water park, and ice rink (Ice Palace), though it is not the biggest in the world. There is also a movie theatre, a bowling alley, and an 18-hole miniature golf course.
8. Golden Resources Mall
From 2004 to 2005, the Golden Resources Mall in China was the biggest shopping mall in the world. It was 1.5 times bigger than the Mall of America. The mall’s creator thought at first that it would have 50,000 shoppers a day, but by 2004, that number was much lower, with as few as 20 shoppers an hour. One problem was that most of the things being sold were too expensive for most Chinese people to afford. Another problem was that foreigners couldn’t get to Golden Resources Shopping Mall because it was outside of Beijing’s central area.
9. New South China Mall
Based on gross leasable space, the New South China Mall in Dongguan, China, is the world’s biggest mall. The mall has seven areas that are based on towns around the world. For example, there is a copy of the Arc de Triomphe and a river with gondolas. It also has a roller coaster that goes inside and outside. Customer are what it doesn’t have.
Since it opened in 2005, the mall has had a serious lack of visitors. Over 99% of the shops are still empty, so a lot of the retail area has stayed empty. The only places in the mall that are filled are near the door, where a number of Western fast food chains are situated. People have called it the world’s biggest ghost mall.
10. CentralWorld
It has eight stories and is the biggest shopping mall in Thailand. It opened in 1990 in Bangkok. It advertised itself as a shopping centre for middle-class people, while Siam Paragon advertised itself as a site for wealthy people. People who were protesting against the government set fire to many buildings on May 19, 2018. CentralWorld was one of them. The fire was very bad for two days, and the Zen department store burned down. After being fixed up for months, the shopping centre returned on September 28 with 80% of its stores open for business.
